RAMONES MANIA

— RADIO, VIDEOS, PRESS, MANAGEMENT

Once The Ramones made an album and the label picked a single, they had to film a video and talk to the press. Then it was up to the record company to promote the album to radio and MTV, and the public to accept or reject it. While The Ramones were always critical darlings and have stood the test of time as a durable, respected act, radio and record sales were always underwhelming. ‘Do You Remember Rock ‘N’ Roll Radio’, ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’, ‘Rockaway Beach’, etc? None of them were chart-toppers. Some of them weren’t even singles at all. The band never had a hit, were never embraced by radio or MTV, and consequently never racked up big sales. It was a vicious cycle and one that plagued the band until their demise. The band was not only quite aware of this quagmire, but nearly defeated by it on several occasions as band members came and went. Except Joey, the perpetual dreamer, who always thought their next album would be their smash hit. Johnny and the guys had accepted their fate as cult icons and were perfectly happy catering to their niche, but Joey wanted more. He knew they had crossover appeal and felt one day they would break through to the mainstream without having to sell out. Enter Gary Kurfirst and Overland Productions.
